Autumn sprint and a call for solidarity

The organization aims to mobilize 1,500 donors to acquire 25 new housing units for aging individuals experiencing homelessness.

Montreal, October 26, 2026 – Today, the ambassadors for *Toit à moi* are launching an intensive push for their 2026–2027 annual fundraising campaign, with the goal of providing housing and support to individuals aged 55 and older who are experiencing homelessness. *Toit à moi* encourages the public to support these ambassadors as they reach out to their personal networks to solicit donations. Members of the general public are also invited to contribute via the *Toit à moi* website between now and Christmas.

Since launching its operations in 2025, Toit à moi has been acquiring existing condominium units valued at $300,000 or less to house individuals who have experienced homelessness. In doing so, the organization helps them regain the stability and support needed to age with dignity and security. During its first year, Toit à moi mobilized a community of 700 donors—sponsors who, through monthly contributions of $25 or more, help cover housing costs, making these homes affordable for those most in need.

With the 2026–2027 campaign, the organization aims to reach a total of 1,500 sponsors, thereby securing the means to acquire 25 additional condos and house an equal number of people in need.

A concerning reality among older adults
As Quebec grapples with a major homelessness crisis, the situation for seniors has reached a critical point. According to findings recently released by the Health and Welfare Commissioner (CSBE), an increasing number of individuals are experiencing homelessness in their later years. The paths leading to this situation are diverse and can be shaped by factors such as rising housing costs, financial instability, and difficulties in accessing appropriate resources.

“The face of homelessness has evolved,” says Serge Lareault, co-founder and executive director of the organization. As the range of people experiencing vulnerability becomes more diverse, the solutions we offer must also evolve. Toit à moi provides an approach that complements existing shelters, community organizations, and support programs, offering a concrete and innovative response to this diversity of needs.”

Focusing on existing housing
Acquiring existing condominium units allows Toit à moi to act quickly, complementing efforts dedicated to the construction of new social housing. While the development of new units can span several years, the organization targets properties already available on the market—valued at $300,000 or less—that can welcome new tenants just months after acquisition. In a context where needs are immediate, this approach makes it possible to rapidly transform existing housing into long-term affordable housing.

After more than eight months in a condo provided by Toit à moi, Martin Fortier—one of the first individuals to be housed by the organization—never imagined he would be able to live in such a place. “I’ve been living here for nearly a year now, and what it has given me, above all, is stability. Having a place of my own, knowing where I’ll sleep at night, being able to get back into a routine, and simply going about my daily life—it makes a world of difference. After everything I’ve been through, I realize every single day how fortunate I am to have found a place where I truly feel at home.”

Inspired by the model developed by Toit à moi in France, Toit à moi Canada acquires its properties through contributions from patrons—including foundations, corporations, major donors, and institutions—as well as from monthly donors, referred to as “sponsors.” These sponsors help cover housing-related costs, ensuring that rents remain affordable. It is also possible to support the organization’s mission through a one-time donation.
